Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is an American healthcare organization which play major role in global medical practice and frequently launches varieties of clinical practice guidelines. Our topic today will be a 2020 updated from CDC treatment guideline on Gonococcal infection. (I have been mentioned the clinical symptom of Gonorrhea in this link)
Ceftriaxone intramuscular injection is considered as first line therapy.
First line Gonorrhea infection treatment of cervix, urethra or rectum:
Ceftriaxone 500 mg intramuscular injection as a single dose (Body weight < 150 kg)
Ceftriaxone 1-gram intramuscular injection as a single dose (Body weight ³ 150 kg)
Alternative Gonorrhea infection treatment of cervix, urethra or rectum:
Gentamicin 240 mg intramuscular injection as single dose + Azithromycin 2 gram orally as single dose
Cefixime 800 mg orally as single dose
Doxycycline oral tablets is considered in case co-infection is suspected.
In case common co-infection, Chlamydia cannot be excluded
Doxycycline 100 mg orally twice a day for 7 days
